Pregnancy and Birth Support for Internationals

workshops-private-coaching-parents (2).p

Are you looking for support from someone who knows what it means to give birth "abroad"? As an immigrant to the United States myself, I found navigating the American birth care system daunting when I was pregnant. I had heard bad stories about hospital births, traumatic experiences, and high cesarean and epidural rates. I found that knowledge and support were key to a positive birth experience abroad. I am here to help you prepare for your international birth, and set you up for success.

A message from Ineke

As a midwife, I have had the opportunity to be present at hundreds of births in hospitals, birth centers, and homes. Birth is a natural and normal process that goes most smoothly when there is a calm and grounding atmosphere, and therefore any medical interventions should be carefully considered before they are done.

When I moved to the US, I almost couldn't believe when my friends told me their experiences of their "normal births". Many were told to stay in bed, were not allowed to eat or drink, or were pressured into having unnecessary interventions which lead to preventable complications. I know it doesn't have to be that way!

So what is the secret? How do you have that empowering and enriching birth experience?

How can we plan for all the different turns and twists your birth adventure will take? I can't predict how your birth will go, but I know that there is immense power in preparation. I will help you (and your partner) prepare for your birth and postpartum by looking at evidence based information, teaching you how to recognize the start of labor and how to use comfort measures, and how to make your choices and wishes heard in the birth room. If birth plan A has to go out of the window, what does your birth plan B look like?

For me it is clear: parents tell me that the EBB Childbirth Class ticks all the boxes and that they feel prepared for birth, whether that is at home, the birth center, or in the hospital. The combination of watching the videos, meeting over Zoom to discuss the materials and homework, and learning the practical skills to make birth more comfortable make this class unique, fun, and useful!

As a new parent myself, I know there are so many things to think about when you prepare for the arrival of your new baby. Trust me, this class will prepare you and your partner for birth, for caring for your baby, and you can step into your new role as a parent with confidence.

I look forward to meeting you!

Listen to what expecting parents have to say about the Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class:

“This class is a total game-changer for us. I’d heard negative stories…I was scared and very on edge. Then once we started taking the class, and when we learned about interventions that I was apprehensive about… It brought us together in that [my partner] understood birth more, and I understood it more. And as soon as I went into labor, we were on. We were a team.”

“I really appreciated how informative it was. I knew a lot about the biology of birth and babies, but what we learned was just very impressive. It was a really good experience—fairly chill, fairly laid-back, and not nearly as stressful and awkward as I thought it might be. All the information—I never would’ve thought there was that much information out there!”

A birth class is an investment

As a midwife, and a mother myself, I know the value of solid birth education. And in my work, I strive to give as many expecting parents access to this comprehensive childbirth class that can make a huge difference in their birth experience.

We are living in an extraordinary moment in time - a pandemic on top of an already hurting birth care system, is making it extra difficult for families to have access to the care they deserve. Evidence shows that Black, Indigenous and People of Color do not have equal access to health or birth care compared to white people, and that systemic and individual racism and generational trauma is leading to poorer health outcomes for these communities. Trans, non-binary, queer and LGBTQI+ people are frequently discriminated against and marginalized. I am dedicated to continue to learn more about how to be anti-racist, to be an ally and accomplice, and I offer a sliding scale to anyone that feels this is helpful or supportive.

If you are a Black or Indigenous expecting parent, an expecting Person of Color, or LGBTQI+, I invite you to use the amount of $50 off the class fee, and spend the money you saved towards your families needs. Please feel free to email me if I can help you in any other way or if you have suggestions for how I can improve my work towards equity and anti-racism in birth education and birth care.

Are you looking forward to having a baby, but are you worried about all the unknowns? For example: how do I know if my wishes will be respected? Will my birth plan be followed? Can I avoid a traumatic birth experience, if I had one before?

The Savvy Birth Workshop gives you and your partner the confidence and know-how you need to have a more positive, empowering experience in the birthing room.

At the Savvy Birth Workshop, you’ll learn ways to communicate effectively with your doctor, midwife, and nurse. You will discover strategies for asking questions without seeming disrespectful and you’ll get the inside scoop on how to stack the odds in your favor of having a positive birth experience. For a full scope birth class, I recommend looking at the Evidence Based Birth Childbirth Class that I offer!

In this workshop, I will help you avoid the typical assembly-line birth care by letting you in on six ways to personalize and improve your birthing experience. This will give you a secret advantage to coping with the unknowns of birth.

At the workshop you’ll find out how you can use these skills in the hospital, or wherever you intend to give birth.

Listen what these parents had to say about the Savvy Birth Workshop:

"Ineke's class was a useful tool for my partner and me. It gave us an overview of topics related to childbirth to consider and helpful examples of things to think and talk about. Having a baby can be overwhelming in terms of the sheer amount and type of information out there and this class provided a framework for what to think about and look for.

Ineke also has extensive work experience in midwifery outside of the US which brought a perspective we really appreciated. Not to mention, Ineke is very easy to talk to and will put you at ease even with the most intimate subjects! Great class!"

Natalia and Alex

If you are planning a home or birth center birth, you are planning to stay out of the hospital. But with the adventure that birth is, you might have to go to the hospital for additional support at some point during your birth. Another option is that you are planning a hospital birth – in that case, you will go to the hospital once your contractions have started and you have labored at home for a while.

Whatever the reason for your move, that transition from your comfortable and familiar environment to a clinical hospital setting can feel daunting and overwhelming, and you might be wondering what you can expect. Luckily, there are ways that you and your partner can prepare to make that transition more smooth, and have a positive experience, no matter where you birth takes place.

In the 1-hour Savvy Birth 101 class from Evidence Based Birth®, you will learn ways to find yourself in the center of respectful and family centered care. As a midwife that has worked in a hospital for many years, I have welcomed hundreds of birthing couples that came in from their home or birth center, and supported them to birth their baby. In this class I will support you and your partner in learning how to create a team-environment and atmosphere in the birth room that works for YOU!

Join me, Ineke, for a Savvy Birth 101 class on December 2nd, or 29th from 7.30 -8.45 PM (PST), or in the new year on January 24th, or February 21st from 7.30 -8.45 PM (PST). We’ll meet online, and yes, you can wear your pajamas 😉.

These are the learning objectives that are covered in Savvy Birth 101:

  1. Define evidence-based care and discuss the difference between evidence-based care and routine care

  2. Describe how the power system works in most hospital labor and delivery units

  3. Discuss ways to create a team-based atmosphere in the birthing room, so that you and your partner can get evidence-based, family-centered care

Savvy 101 is 100% online and is available to all parents. I strongly advice you to attend this class with your partner or one pregnancy or birth support person. Choose a group workshop to learn together with parents who are expecting just like you, or learn with just your birth team in a private workshop. Check out the ticket prices below!

Group Workshop - $25

  • 1-hour workshop on Zoom for you and your partner or birth support person
